We know Jesus wasn't white -- but that's what toymaker Mattel is teaching children by depicting the Holy Family and the angel Gabriel as white in their Fisher Price "Little People Nativity" playsets.
Selling a blonde, white Jesus toy isn't just untrue to history -- it's untrue to the message of the Gospel, and fuels the very oppression that Jesus opposed. As the University of Pennsylvania's renowned Professor Anthea Butler told Religion News Service, "Every time you see white Jesus, you see white supremacy."
Or as Fr. James Martin, S.J., has explained in America magazine, "Images of white Jesus have obviously been used to promote the idea that white is best."
We believe that Mattel wants to do the right thing. They're already making Barbie toys more diverse, and their executives seemed receptive to a letter Faithful America sent them about this issue. But before any major corporation ever takes action, they always need to see that consumers will support the change.
Let's gather 10,000 signatures to show Mattel that Christians and customers across the country want the Fisher Price Nativity playsets changed in time for the 2021 holiday season.
